If you are a startup founder and want to raise venture capital there are a ton of variables that are out of your control. Knowing your numbers is not one of them. Fundraising is hard enough don’t create additional speed bumps for yourself. An early stage founder doesn’t need to know some obscure fact, competitor or piece of data, however you do need to know your KPI’s and other business metrics that are critical to your startup’s success. “I need to check with my _______” is not an acceptable answer when it comes to core metrics. A startup CEO can’t effectively set strategy without an intimate knowledge of the core drivers of their business.
